Home > Copenhagen > Christiania

Christiania, called by inhabitants the Freetown or the Town, is a partly independent “city within a city”, and a home to hippies, anarchist and drug dealers.

The history of this community started in 1971, when Danish army abandoned the 40 hectare of former barracks and supply magazines. The area was inhabited in the same year, and in anarchist press “the Freetown” was proclaimed.
Although the land is still a property of a Danish Defence Ministry, the rules in Christiania are quite different from Danish law. The main of them forbid to steal, use cars, violence, guns, bulletproof vest and hard drugs. Without regular police, the execution of this laws are sometimes problematic. The main reason of conflict with Copenhagen authorities are drugs dealers, as hash and skunk weed are legal in Christiania law.
During a visit in this interesting neighbourhood tourist have to remember that one of prohibited things is making a photos and movies of Christiania resident.
