Turku is the oldest city in Finland, located in a 13th century, when Dominican monastery was founded. Turku was Finland first capitol, and when country was under Swedish rule it became, under the Swedish name Abo, the largest and the most important city. This status of unofficial capitol was lost in 1812, when Russians established Helsinki the capitol of new Grand Duchy of Finland. The city is located in the mouth of Aura river, and spreads on its both sides. Over the western bank dominates Turku Castle – impressive monument form 14th century and one of the oldest medieval buildings in Finland. On the Eastern side (called by citizens „this side of the river”, while western is „the other side”) is located the old town, together with Turku Cathedral, the most important city landscape. The cathedral is located just next to the Old Great Square, medieval market square surrounded by mansions and university buildings. If simple walk tgrough the medieval city is not enough, Turku can offer entertainment of every kind. Museums of Art, History or interesting Museum of Pharmacy, many parks and recreational sites, and finally amusement parks, with well known Moominland in Naantali.
