Above the trees of canal side park rise the high column with a statue of liberty on the top. Liberty, in a shape of girl with three glided stars in hands, representing Latvian Independence, National Pride and the difficult 20th century history.

The monument was built in 1935, in honour of soldiers died in Independence War (1918-1920). It survived Soviet times, and became a place of anti-Soviet manifestations. This function of a meeting place and background of important events, the monument has also nowadays.
The base of the column is decorated by human figures, depicting parts of Latvia culture and history. At the centre place there is an embodiment of Latvia, the sides are depict the most important battles in Latvian History, on a corners are groups of scholars, workers, and family.
All year long at the foot of the monument are present two guardians of the Guard of Honour.
